Prep

Our  Prep School is a provision for primary school aged children ( St Nicholas House) as well as boarding and day  provision from Age 10- 12 (Alway House) , with the same warmth of community, qualities and values that we promote in the senior school.

Pupils can access  a varied second curriculum programme including music, performing and creative arts, sport.

Taking advantage of our enviable location, pupils also enjoy ‘outdoor club’ sessions focused on building confidence and introducing pupils to natural world subjects. In the dedicated facility on the school grounds, pupils can feed their curiosity and explore the surrounding woodland, building dens, putting on shows in the mini amphitheatre, and observing the wildlife in the pond and meadow.

On completion of Year 6, a  pupil’s  ‘Prep’ journey through Christ College moves to Alway House, as they transition through Years 7&8 in preparation for Senior School.

What can our youngest pupils expect?

The lively younger ‘Prep’ pupils of St Nicholas House have helped to shape this section of Christ College Brecon into a warm environment where each individual is encouraged to explore and express their potential across all faculties.

Underpinned by the Key Stage One National Curriculum and complemented by aspects of the Curriculum for Wales, we aim to provide a rich, structured and engaging education, allowing unique opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self esteem, through practical, hands on learning experiences.
With an all-round education philosophy, activities are broad and varied, encouraging independent enquiry, collaborative working skills and a sense of discovery.

Key Stage 2 Classes

Daily Guided Reading

Your child will be encouraged to make full use of the School's well-resourced Library with its extensive range of fiction, non-fiction and reference texts. Daily Guided Reading sessions develop our pupils’ comprehension skills and facilitate discussion.

Creative and Performing Arts

Creative and Performing Arts are also given a high profile. Drama features in curriculum planning and as an extra-curricular activity. All pupils have the opportunity to take part in Inter-House Public Speaking, Eisteddfod and Debating competitions.

Art and Design

These subjects enjoy specialist facilities including a kiln which enables the study of ceramics to be included in the curriculum programme and access to networked computers to aid pupil research and inspire their planning of projects.

Science

Our Science curriculum aims to develop sophisticated understanding through first-hand experience, whilst maintaining a balance between academic rigour and having fun.

Aiding and enhancing the transition to Senior School, our upper prep pupils are given opportunities to experience lessons in our specialist senior school teaching laboratories.

PE and Games

Your child will benefit from the extensive facilities here, and from expert coaching from experienced sports staff. We ensure as many pupils as possible have the opportunity to play for a team.

Sporting and Culture

Academic studies are complemented by a diverse programme of sporting and cultural activities which give a breadth of experience to pupils, offering them opportunities to enjoy new pursuits and develop additional skills.
