Summer Camp Overview
If your 10-17 year old children are looking for an international adventure during the summer holidays, come and join the Christ College Summer Adventure Camps between the 3rd – 16th August 2024.
Our camps provide an exciting opportunity for young people to enjoy adventurous and sporting activities, speak English, make new friends and build confidence in a residential setting right at the heart of Brecon.
A wide range of activities are on offer within the local mountains, rivers and woodland of the Brecon Beacons and the Gower coastline.
Further details for 2024 will be available soon but so far, activities have included go karting, mountain biking for over 12s, canoeing, rock climbing, high ropes & zip wire, gorge walking, caving and multi-team sport competitions.
This is an opportunity to have fun, build new friendships and enjoy a great sense of achievement as children challenge themselves in new way and harness their spirt of adventure away from home.
Based at Christ College, we make full use of the surrounding areas nearby and further afield along the Gower coastline. Children will have the best of both worlds: adventure during the day, an evening programme of fun and relaxation at night back at the boarding house.
Activities are gently challenging and aimed at encouraging teamwork and having fun. As a parent you are offered complete reassurance that your children are enjoying themselves in the great outdoors. As children, you will have fun and a great adventure!

Adventure Activities
The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of the premier locations in the UK to enjoy a wide range of adventurous activities such as gorge walking, rock climbing, canoeing, raft building and abseiling. Take a look at some of the activities that may be included in the summer camp for 2024.
Coasteering
Coasteering for age groups younger than 14, the cliffs between Caswell Bay and Brandy Cove offer a fascinating journey through ledges, caves and pools, culminating with a series of jumps into the sea.
For groups older than 14, the cliffs of Rhossili present a much more challenging environment adding much more swimming and a progressively higher range of jumps.
Rock Climbing
Several crags on the Gower coast are ideally suited to novice climbers to gain the skills and confidence to safely climb sheer rock faces operating in teams taking responsibility for each others safety. Venue and route choice can be varied to take into account the age, needs and abilities of all students.
Surfing
Have fun in the sea and surf of the Gower coastline and learn from experts how to manage and stand on your surfboard and travel with the waves.
Caving
South Wales is one of the UKs best areas for exploring the subterranean environment. Caving is an enormously powerful activity where all participants achieve so much more than they think they can. A progressive series of challenges, interspersed with some fascinating insights into the geology and geomorphology of the underground environment makes caving a perfect activity for mixed ability groups wanting to learn, grow and have fun.
Canoeing
A great adventure out on the water in canoes learning the essential skill of paddling and then navigating and journeying along the river throughout the day. Learn new techniques and take part in games along the way, no doubt races too!
High Level Ropes & Zip Wire
Equipped with a safety harness and climbing helmet, you will attempting several rope challenges starting from ground level up to 30ft high, such as the balance log, trapeze bar and cow tails. But don’t worry, your team mates are there to help and encourage you and your instructor is keeping a close watch at all times. You will finish with an 80 meter zip wire.
Land Karting
A new challenge this year to design and build a cart and put it to the test on a downhill slalom course. Teams will be equipped with planks, ropes and the all important wheels, then the design and construction will begin.
Mountain Biking ( Age 12 +)
Equipped with a 21 speed, front-suspension ‘Trek’ mountain bike and helmet, you’ll be ready to hit the biking trails of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. Skilled mountain biking instructors will guide you through off-road biking routes, choosing a track suitable to the ability the group, as well as teach you a good variety of mountain biking skills – useful for the biking games they will introduce you to!
Gorge Scrambling & Rock Climbing
An immensely popular activity which includes jumps, slides, swims and an array of challenges. Wearing wetsuits, buoyancy aid and water helmet you will following your instructor and his instructions and will be making your way upstream of the river, exploring behind waterfalls, jumping off ledges and jumping into deep pools. The day would be split between the two activities, giving both a wet and dry option throughout the day.
Mountain Challenge
What better way to end the camp than to scale Pen Y Fan or one of the many other peaks in the local area and contemplate your international adventure. The destination and route will be adapted to suit the needs, age and abilities of participants.
Sport & Team Challenges
Sports coaches will be leading team based games in traditional sports as well as frisbee golf, capture the flag and swimming. Students will have an opportunity to challenge themselves in teams and have fun along the way. Den building is a new challenge this year!
Art or Cartoon Illustration
Listening to feedback last year and in order to offer time for some creative pursuits, students may choose an art cartoon illustration workshop to capture the essence of their adventure week. Both workshops are suited to students of all artistic ability and they will be able to take their creation home as a keep sake of their time here on camp.
Recreational Activities
Despite busy and action packed days, students will enjoy free time to relax in the grounds or in the boarding house with supervision at all times. There will also be a full programme of evening activities in which to participate and round off each day.
Excellent facilities include extensive sports fields, heated swimming pool, sports hall, tennis and squash courts, all-weather sports pitch, 9 hole golf course and a performance hall.
Social events include, camp fires, parachute games, team challenges, treasure hunts, quizzes and an end of camp party.
Sport
Sports coaches will be leading team based games in traditional sports such as tennis, cricket, swimming and rounders as well as frisbee golf, orienteering, dodgeball and capture the flag.
British Culture
International students will be introduced to aspects of British culture, art or photography to experiment with different ways of expression other than language and have fun cultivating further their artistic flair.
Our Environment
We will be maximising the location of Christ College and introducing students to our local environment during activities.
Day Visits
One full day trip is planned to either Stratford on Avon, home of Shakespeare and typical English town, or Oxford, home to the prestigious university.
English Language Teaching (EAL)
Formal English Language tuition will take place in small classes and children who will be grouped according to ability. English language tuition will focus on teaching students to express their thoughts and ideas in English and to respond to English speakers. Both written and oral proficiency will be targeted. There will be two hours of classes each week day.
Students will be immersed daily in English language as English will be spoken by all camp participants and teachers at all times.
