Young Instrumentalist Of The Year

IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE OF GUESTS, PARENTS AND PUPILS, SEVEN YOUNG INSTRUMENTALISTS BATTLED IT OUT FOR THE ACCOLADE OF YOUNG INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR.

Generously supported by Old Breconian, W Hugh Phillips JP, FCOptom, this competition is now in its third year and celebrates some of the best of musical talent at Christ College.

The seven finalists who competed in the Christ College Instrumentalist of the Year 2016 were: P Bowen (Alto Saxophone, Year 9), H Mathias (Cello, Year 10), Z Solomon (Harp, Year 10) A Hernandez Panes (Bassoon, Year 10), D Kim (Clarinet, Year 11), H Sennett (Cello & Piano, Year 12) and G James (Violin, Year 13).

After some dazzling performances from all competitors, prizes were awarded by adjudicator and professional cellist Rowena Calvert as follows:

Best performance of a piece composed before 1816: G James (‘Summer’ from ‘The Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi); Best performance of a piece composed after 1916: A Hernandez Panes (‘Palotas & Friss’ by J Balogh); Christ College Instrumentalist of the Year 2016: H Sennett (Cello: ‘Gambensonate in C Dur’ by C P E Bach; Piano: ‘Nocturne pour la main gauche’ by Scriabin).

Congratulations to all of the musicians for their excellent performances at such a high standard. Music is thriving at Christ College, and we all look forward to next week’s Young Singer of the Year Competition.
