They Think It’S All Over … It Is Now As A 12 Hour Football Marathon Raises Over £2000!

In order to raise money for the charity Dreams & Wishes, the Upper Sixth Prefect Team led on this occasion by Sophie Rudge and Benj Kriehn, with support from fellow sixth-former Dominic Wilson-Howe, organised a non-stop 12 hour football tournament that involved the whole Christ College community, with girls and boys from the senior houses playing as well as a parents and staff team!

One of those participating, Head of Creative Arts, John Johnson, said: “There has been constant support throughout the day and the event has raised over £2000. The event was put together to mark the one year anniversary of the passing of third former Alexander McIlroy who was a great football fan. During Alexander’s gruelling treatment the Dreams & Wishes charity organised for him to watch his beloved Liverpool FC at Anfield, a memory that his family cherish dearly. The pupils at Christ College therefore decided to show their support for the charity as a way of remembering Alexander.”

The event, which ran from 6am to 6pm, was organised and managed by the pupils at Christ College in what was a carnival atmosphere. In addition to the football, many pupils helped with baking cakes which were sold on the day, others set up PA equipment and provided entertaining commentary, as well as helping to officiate and referee the marathon tournament.

At the end of the matches, Alexander’s mother, Anna McIlroy, stepped up to the microphone to thank the Christ College community for the warmth of their support to Alexander during his final year, and for their efforts on the day. The Head of Christ College, Emma Taylor, led the school in a minute’s applause for Alexander and for the charity.

Mrs Taylor said ‘It is typical of our senior pupils that, when they could have been relaxing after examinations, they were, instead, organising a fantastic event that has brought the community together, brought to mind Alexander doing what he loved best, and raised money for this very special cause. I am deeply proud of them.’.
