Star Ben Shines At The Lyric Theatre

CHRIST COLLEGE BRECON YEAR 11 PUPIL, BEN, STARRED IN THE FRENZY OF SWEENEY AT THE LYRIC THEATRE, BELFAST AT THE END OF THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS.

Back in February, Ben from Brecon, who studies GCSE Drama at Christ College, attended the auditions in Cardiff for the Youth Music Theatre UK company .

Youth Music Theatre audition young people between the ages of 11 to 21 every year for shows across the UK. In 2016 YMT ran shows in, amongst other places, Plymouth, Aberdeen, London and Belfast.

Ben was offered a place in the show in Belfast and flew out at the end of July for a two week residential where he worked with a professional artistic team to creat a brand new piece of musical theatre called the Frenzy of Sweeney. Based on a Celtic folktale, the production switched between modern day and the Dark Age setting of the original tale. It wove a moving and intricate narrative, set to top quality choreography and music. Ben played the part of the young Sweeney which involved performing a solo piece, lots of singing and some impressive jumps!

The show was performed at Belfast’s wonderful new Lyric Theatre on the banks of the River Lagan in the south of the city. On his return to school in September, Ben said, “It was a stimulating and incredible experience which I will always remember. It was a great honour to work with such a talented team of professionals and young people.”

The cast comes together again in December to perform excerts from the show at YMT’s annual Christmas extravaganza, Let it Snow! This will be held at a theatre on Oxford Street, London.
