Following a successful preliminary round three days before, the Christ College Singer of the Year Competition 2016 was held on Friday.
Generously supported by Lloyds Bank, this competition celebrates some of the best vocal talent at Christ College. The six finalists who competed in the Christ College Singer of the Year 2016 final round were:
Phoebe S (Year 10); Nancy D (Year 11); Cai W (Year 11); Joseph W (Year 13); Daniel G (Year 13), and Trystan W (Year 13).
Each finalist performed three songs from memory, and after hearing ambitious and incredibly brave performances from all competitors, prizes were awarded by the adjudicator, Angela Livingstone (Head of Opera & Vocal Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama) as follows –
Best performance of a piece composed before 1816: Cai W (‘Music for a while’ by Purcell, and ‘Abendempfindung’ by Mozart);
Best performance of a piece composed after 1916: Daniel G (‘Maria’ from ‘West Side Story’ by Bernstein);
Christ College Singer of the Year 2016: Trystan W (‘The Wanderer’ by Haydn, ‘The Vagabond’ by Vaughan Williams, ‘Avant de quitter ces lieux’ by Gounod).
Trystan received the Tom Dargavel Trophy, a magnificent prancing horse which not only symbolises Lloyds Bank’s commitment to this competition, but is named after the late Tom Dargavel, a Lloyds Bank Commercial Services Relationship Director, who did so much to support the Creative Arts at Christ College.
