Pupils Learn About Renewable Energies With The Help Of A Local Community Hydro Scheme

Talybont on Usk Energy Ltd owns and manages a community hydro scheme in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Their 36kW hydro electric turbine works off the compensation flow from Talybont Reservoir and has been running since 2006. It was the first community hydro scheme in Wales.

After visiting the project a few years ago, Head of Science at Christ College, Guy Hope, was so inspired by what he saw, he developed an educational package for pupils.

Mr Hope explained: “This is one of the most important and beneficial field visits that these pupils will experience. During our visit today we began by estimating the dimensions of the reservoir from the top of the dam, in glorious sunshine! We then had the benefit of meeting one of the directors of Talybont Energy, Adele Nozedar, who showed us the turbine and generator in its original generator house.”

Mr Hope commented: “Renewable energies are now a key feature of the curriculum and the fact that this project is, geographically, so close to Christ College is a real gift!”
