Pupils Given A Lesson On ‘Unleashing Dynamism’

Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water (Glas Cymru) is the sixth largest water supplier in the UK. In 2000, Glas Cymru, a not for profit company, took over Welsh Water which had been privatized and was performing badly as a for-profit company. Mr Annett, a founder of Glas Cymru. explained the not-for-profit model that was used to form Glas Cymru, and the challenge of raising over £1 billion on the Bond Market to launch the company. Since the takeover, he explained that Welsh Water has improved considerably, so much so that it has been described as a ‘phoenix’, with some of the highest quality scores and lowest operating costs in the sector.
Mr Annett reflected on the factors that have facilitated their success, including good governance structures, enabling a dedicated workforce, a flexible approach to outsourcing, and an intensive focus on quality measurement.
The pupils appreciated his candid and relaxed presentation and his thoughtful answers to a range of questions. He then took time to join invited guests at a reception afterwards where he gave pupils further advice and direction on a range of matters.
