Musician of the Year 2024

On Friday 23rd February, our most experienced musicians went head-to-head in two parallel competitions to find the ‘best’ singer and instrumentalist at Christ College for 2024.

This year’s event was adjudicated by Simon Phillippo, Head of the Keyboard Department at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. The event started in the Chapel with the singing round, and then moved to the Neuadd for the instrumental round.

We are hugely grateful to Old Breconian, W. Hugh Phillips JP, FCOptom for his most generous and continued support of the Christ College Musician of the Year competition.


This year, prizes were awarded as follows:


1st place: Annika Hewitt, singing ‘Gorgeous’ from The Apple Tree – Annika Hewitt (voice) – ‘Gorgeous’ from The Apple Tree – Alda-Harris-Bock.mov

2nd Place: Tali Eastwood, singing ‘Stars’ from Les Miserables

3rd Place: Sofia Holmes, singing ‘Pulled’ from The Addams Family



1st place: Kurumi Tajiri (violin), playing Symphonie Espagnole by Lalo – Kurumi Tajiri (violin) – Symphonie Espagnole 1st mvt. – Lalo.mov

2nd place: Tali Eastwood (piano), playing Prelude from Suite Bergamasque by Debussy

3rd place: Harry Ling (French horn), playing Concerto in E flat, 2nd mvt. by Mozart

Highly Commended: Edward Habgood (guitar), playing Study No.13 by Carcassi
