House Debating Competition

House Debating Competition

The curtain draws on another excellent inter-house debating competition with Donaldson’s house emerging triumphant following a superb final against Orchard. All six speakers, Sophia, Elsie, Efanna, Jack, Harrison and Lewis were tremendously effective and provided rhetorical flourishes, a wealth of evidence and persuasive conclusions to advance their arguments. Particular congratulations to Elsie and Jack for being awarded the joint speakers of the day.

While the momentum behind the house competitions has been in full swing, some of our pupils have also been involved in the Oxford University Schools’ Debating Competition. Three teams of pupils drawn from the Senior Debating Society at Christ College took part in the competition.  Under the rules of British Parliamentary debating, the teams were given a motion and a position to argue and a mere 15 minutes to prepare, completely unaided, before delivering their arguments and engage in debate with teams from other schools – there were over 60 other teams in the round, all looking for a place at the Oxford final, the pinnacle of schools’ debating.

Jack and Tomos (Christ College Brecon ‘A’ Team) were successful, placing within the top seven schools in the round and have been invited to the final at the famous Oxford Union building (past speakers include Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, HH the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking). In March they will travel to Oxford to face the elite of the schools debating world, drawn not only from the best British schools but also international teams, representing countries from across the world.

We are hugely proud of Jack and Tomos and wish them the very best of luck at Oxford.
