WITH JUST OVER A WEEK TO GO UNTIL THE REAL THING, CHRIST COLLEGE BRECON WILL BE HOLDING IT’S OWN ‘EUROPEAN REFERENDUM’ ON THE SAME DAY.
With campaigning across the country reaching fever pitch, pupils and staff at Christ College are preparing for the school’s own Mock Referendum. Last week, Head of PSE, Mrs Sandhu took year 10 pupils to the local hustings event in the Castle Hotel. Seeing actual politicians in action was enormously worthwhile and the pupils had the added excitement of meeting Christine and Neil Hamilton.

The Assembly
On June 20th the Head, Mrs Emma Taylor, will chair a special Assembly with the Remain and Leave Team presenting their arguments. English teacher, Dr Evans, is working with the teams to write and prepare their speeches within their allocated time of 6 minutes each.
In PSE, Mrs Sandhu has been encouraging the pupils to understand the differences between this and the General Election and also to consider the fact that the way people vote will have a lot of emotion involved. “Do I feel British or European? Am I a risk taker or would I rather play it safe?” will be some of the questions pupils will no doubt be asking themselves.
Mrs Sandhu will also this week be running a session about the Referendum in St Nicholas House to ensure that they will get the most out of the assembly and the voting experience. As J5 & J6 are off to Manor Park, they will be voting using postal votes this Friday.
The Head to Head Teachers’ Debate
This will take place during lesson 8 on Monday in the Neuadd. Dr Phelps will be representing the Remain team and Mr Copp the Leave Team.
Referendum Day June 23rd
The polling station will be open from 8:30 am in the Clive Richards Room, everybody in the school will have the chance to vote.
Results of the day will be published on facebook and twitter. It certainly will be a very tense day in Christ College.
