Christ College Instrumentalist and Singer of the Year 2023

On Friday 3rd March 2023, we were delighted to hold the annual Christ College Instrumentalist and Singer of the Year competition, this year adjudicated by Roger Argente, Head of Brass performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

A large and supportive audience gathered first in the Chapel for the singing round, then moving to the dryer acoustic of the Neuadd for the instrumental performances. Each of these rounds attracted separate cash prizes and trophies. Once again, the event was made possible through the generosity of Old Breconian W. Hugh Phillips JP, FCOptom, who also presented the prizes.

The standard of performance was very high, with 17 musicians drawn from Year 9 through to Year 13, and all playing at a level of ABRSM Grade 6 or above. Many thanks to Mr Jonathan Cooper who accompanied all of the singers, as well as Mr Alan Davies who accompanied the string players.

The final results were as follows:

Singer of the Year

1st Place: Charlie G – Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen by W A Mozart

2nd Place: Olivia O – I Dreamed a Dream by Schönberg

3rd Place: Taliesin E – O Waly, Waly by Britten

Instrumentalist of the Year

1st Place: Kurumi T (violin) – Praeludium und Allegro by Kreisler

2nd Place: Dylan R (piano) – Andante by Janáček

3rd Place: Ben M (piano) – Impromptu in A flat by Schubert

Many congratulations to all who took part.
