On Monday 15th May 2023, Christ College Brecon hosted a wonderful evening from two rising young stars in the world of music. Anna Phillips was a music scholar at CCB and went on to receive a scholarship to study harp at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she is now studying for a Master’s degree and receiving lessons from Catrin Finch. At the Royal Academy Anna met Konya Kanneh-Mason, also on a scholarship and studying piano. Konya comes from a famous musical family of prodigious talent. Their concert in the Neuadd at Christ College was a first for them in terms of a formal musical collaboration and it was extremely well received by a large and supportive audience made up of pupils, parents, staff and members of the wider community.
In addition to several mesmerising items played individually, Anna and Konya came together to perform Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn by John Thomas (arranged for harp and piano by Anna Phillips), Piano Concerto No. 23, 2nd movement – Andante by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Myfanwy Trad. (again, arranged for harp and piano by Anna Phillips). Needless to say, there was much conversation at the post-concert reception about a return visit at the soonest opportunity!
