Battle's Over Event - Brecon

We are part of Battle's Over – commemorating 100 years since the end of WWI - November 11th 2018

Brecon Town Council is playing it's part in Battle's Over, an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I.


Battle's Over events are taking place on November 11th 2018, throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and at scores of locations overseas, including New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Bermuda, France, Belgium, Canada, the United States and Germany, to name but a few.

Brecon's event will be at the Bandstand, The Promenade and will commence at 6.15pm when the RAF St Athan ensemble will play, followed by Brecon Male Choir and Christ College.

Timings for the event are as follows:

5pm Set up

6.15pm Welcome by the Mayor and introduce RAF St Athan ensemble

6.30pm Aberhonddu Male Choir

6.45pm Christ College, Brecon

6.55pm Last post and 2 minutes silence

7.00pm Beacon lit by the Mayor, accompanied by Army Cadet and Air Cadet

7.01pm Closing speech and thank you – Mayor. RAF St Athan ensemble will play as people disperse

At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm beacons will be lit in a tribute called Beacons of Light, signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war.

Then at 7.05pm over 1,000 church and cathedrals will ring their bells as part of Ringing Out for Peace organised in association with the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, which represents 65 societies of ringers from the British Isles and overseas. Brecon Bell Ringers will be taking part in this.

All are very welcome to attend. Please dress warmly and bring a torch.
