Christ College, Brecon, is proud to announce that Oliver (Olly) Lewis, Captain of the school's 1st XV Rugby team, has been selected for the Dragons Academy squad following a successful performance during the Regional Age Grade programme.
Olly started mini rugby in 2007 at Pencoed RFC (U7s-U13). In 2014, he joined Brecon RFC, where he still plays today. In 2016 he started playing for the Dragons. From U16s he progressed to U18s, before entering the Dragons Academy.
Andrew Lewis, Olly's dad and Former Wales International Rugby Union prop, as well as Governor of Christ College, said: "The news that Olly has been invited into the Dragons Academy gives rise to conflicting emotions for me. On the one hand, I'm immensely proud of what he has achieved, in the current highly competitive environment of youth rugby, reaching the upper echelons of his age group at a regional level requires far more talent and commitment than what was required from me to play international school boy rugby many years ago.
"On the other hand, I may finally have to resign myself to the fact that my son is always going to be a back!"
James Reynolds, Director of Rugby at Christ College, said: "This is very exciting news, and we are delighted for Olly. Always up for a challenge, he has worked hard towards his ambitions, and as captain of our 1st XV rugby team he displayed great sportsmanship and strong leadership abilities.
"Olly fully deserves his place among the Dragon Academy – we wish him the best of luck and look forward to watching his first match as part of the squad during half term, as they prepare for the Super Series."
In addition to supporting local rugby clubs like Brecon RFC and Gwernyfed RFC, Christ College also works with the WRU and in conjunction with regional clubs to ensure its rugby structure is of a high standard to support players who wish to develop their sport alongside their academic studies.
