About the DepartmentReading allows us to see and understand the world through the eyes of others. A good book is an empathy engine’ Chris Riddell, UK Children’s Laureate 2016
Pupils studying English at Christ College will not only develop the core communication, comprehension and empathetic skills that are essential to life, but they will also gain a lasting love of reading and discussing literature.
Through our teaching we aim to equip our students with the reading and writing skills needed for other subjects, as well as analytical skills to engage critically with the wide variety of texts that they read.
Outside the classroom, pupils are taken to a variety of plays from ‘Twelfth Night’ in Stratford to ‘An Ideal Husband’ in London. They attend academic lecture days and we invite visiting writers, such as Owen Sheers and Robin Stevens, to speak to our pupils. Creative writing and reading clubs for KS3 pupils and our increasingly successful Senior Debating club provide opportunities beyond the curriculum.
Pupils who wish to study English at university are given additional lessons and support. We have been delighted to see our pupils go on to study at Edinburgh, Birmingham, King’s College and Oxford in recent years.
