10 Reasons Why International Pupils Want To Come To Christ College Brecon

Are you wondering why many international pupils choose to come and study at Christ College? Below are 10 reasons that our international pupils regularly give on why being a boarder at Christ College is a great choice.
- You receive an excellent education in all subjects. Christ College has highly qualified and experienced staff. They ensure that their teaching takes into account different learning styles. Therefore lessons are varied and are not just about listening to the teacher ... class discussions, practical activities and a variety of media ensure that lessons are fresh and exciting. You soon learn to think for yourself. International pupils go on to achieve superb grades, go on to some of the countries best universities and onto highly successful careers.
- You'll work in small classes with friendly teachers. Many pupils say that the relationships they develop with their teachers is their strongest memory of Christ College. At Christ College, the teacher:pupil ratio is 1:9 and therefore the teachers will know their pupils as an individual person. Many teachers live in or close to the school and also act as tutors, giving extra help outside of the classroom. They, along with the Houseparents, ensure that you are up-to-date with your 'prep' (homework) and that their are plenty of opportunities to go over something that you don't quite understand.
- You'll never be bored or have much free time to be homesick. At Christ College, there are dozens of activities to choose from. You'll have the opportunity to play musical instruments, sing in choirs, take part in music & drama productions, or choose to become involved in outdoor pursuits such as climbing, canoeing, sailing or mountain biking. You can also learn skills through organisations such as Young Enterprise or the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme which are run by teachers at Christ College. The greatest difficulty you will have is choosing what you want to do and fitting it all in!
- You can practise your English until its perfect. You will be with English speakers virtually all of the time. All of the lessons are in English as are the textbooks. You will learn fast as most of the other pupils will be English speaking as 85% of the pupils at Christ College are from the UK. If you need extra help with your English, Mr Slaney runs the EAL course at Christ College and gives extra support.
- You can use the school's facilities almost all of the time because you're on the school campus almost 24/7. For example, by arrangement with teachers you could go back in to use the laboratories, use the sports centre or fitness suite when you want to.
- You make very special new friends. Some of your new friends will live in the UK, while others will be from around the world - at Christ College there are pupils from over 16 different countries. Pupils who board together at school become an extended family and many of these new friendships will last for the rest of your life. You'll be carefully looked after by your Houseparents and tutors who live with you in your boarding house. They will care for you at school and will have become an important part of your lives.
- You'll eat delicious food and plenty of it so you'll never go hungry for long. If you do, the houses have kitchens where you can make yourself a snack or there's always the Tuck Shop. However our Catering Manager Daniel (he's French!) ensures that there is always a great choice at each meal sitting using as much local produce as possible. As a Boarding School we have to be able to cater for all diets and backgrounds and you can be assured that we try to meet all needs. Mealtimes in our 13th Century Dining Hall are great social opportunities to chat to your friends ... we regularly celebrate different countries cuisine with incredibly exotic menus!
- You won't waste time travelling to and from school every day. The campus at Christ College is relatively tight knit ... we have lots of open spaces here with around 40 acres of playing fields but the mains school buildings are all close to the boarding houses. Therefore you'll only have a short distance to walk to from your house to your lessons.
- Living on a campus helps you to prepare for university life. Sharing facilities such as dormitories, study bedrooms and in-house kitchens at our Junior House or one of the five Senior Houses is good preparation for Halls of Residence at universities. Also, our system helps you to organise your work and time, and generally encourages you to think for yourself.
- You'll have huge amounts of fun. Almost all of our visitors comment on what a happy atmosphere there is at Christ College ... we believe that a key factor in this is that we are predominantly a Boarding School with over 65% of our pupils boarding. Boarders tend to be happy pupils who enjoy working, living and playing together.
Christ College occupies a beautiful site on the outskirts of Brecon, a safe, small market town in the Brecon Beacons National Park.
"What a jewel Christ College Brecon is ... if I was starting out all over again, I can think of nowhere finer." - Visiting Headmaster
We are situated in an area which contains some of the most spectacular and diverse landscapes in Europe. However, excellent road and rail links mean that major town and cities are very accessibly with Cardiff and Swansea being less than 1 hours drive away; Birmingham just over 2 hours away and; London being just over 3 hours drive away.
These 10 factors combined with our unique location means that Christ College is an increasingly popular choice for both parents and their sons or daughters. Indeed, it is an automatic choice for those seeking a school that offers high academic standards and real personal development in a warm friendly environment, set in a stunning location.
