Why we must plan for the future ...
"Education will never become as expensive as ignorance"
Since Henry VIII granted its charter in 1541, Christ College has influenced the lives of thousands of young people. Today Christ College is a caring community with a strong sense of identity and purpose. First class teaching enables boys and girls to achieve their full potential.
But despite 460 years of history Christ College has never had any endowment. The Christ College Foundation has therefore been established as a continuous fundraising programme to provide the Governors with the resources to fund scholarships and Bursaries for deserving young people regardless of their financial circumstances, and to improve the school’s facilities. A lifetime partnership with former pupils, parents and friends of the school, will be the key to its success.
Target - To achieve these aims we need a capital endowment of £10 Million for Scholarships and Bursaries and a similar sum for capital improvements.
Success so far - Capital funds available for scholarships and bursaries stands at just over £2.7M.
- The Llysdinam Trust has continued to make generous grants totalling £54,000 for bursaries.
- Christ College is a beneficiary of the will of Florence Jones, widow of Hubert Jones OB, with approximately £4.1 M received to date. A considerable proportion of this legacy is used to provide science-based scholarships.
- A further £1.5M has been pledged as legacies by generous Old Breconians and friends of Christ College.
- A new IT Suite and Fitness Suite has been built and is now in use.
- de Winton House has been extended adding capacity to our girls’ boarding facilities.
- The Quad area of the school has been revamped and landscaped.
- The Dining Hall floors have been replaced.
- The second floor of Orchard House has been refurbished.
- A very generous donation of £100,000 by an Old Breconian enabled the school to construct of a floodlit Astroturf playing surface. This was formally opened by Martyn Hazell and is known as "Hazell's".
- Part-financing of the Hubert Jones Science Centre opened in May 2009.
- The Penn Scholarship in conjunction with Penn Pharmaceuticals in Tredegar for an outstanding young scientist to study science A levels at Christ College.
- A major award by the Heritage Lottery Fund for the development of the RJ Boulton Archive opened on 28th June 2009.
- An annual grant programme arranged with the Reardon Smith Nautical Trust and Tall Ships Youth Trust to enable pupils to participate in Tall Ships voyages whilst working towards their DofE Gold Award.
- In the region of £30,000 has been raised for essential repairs to the Chapel.
There is a long way to go! BUT You can help make a real difference no matter how modest your financial contribution may be.
Structure - The Development at Christ College consists of the Development Director, Mr Stephen Maggs and Development Officer Mrs Rhion Johnston. It works closely with Secretary of the Old Breconian Association Huw Richards. The Foundation is governed by charity legislation and the funds are ‘ring fenced’ within the Christ College Brecon charity. All donors can be confident that their interests and wishes will be fully protected.
