Art
Our aim is to encourage students to develop their artistic skill, creativity, imagination and independence. The course is devised to accommodate a wide range of approaches in the use of materials, processes and techniques, whilst also broadening the student's cultural awareness and knowledge of the work of artists, photographers and designers.
Biology
The courses offered provide the opportunity to gain a sound understanding of biology through the study of fundamental biological principles whilst exploring modern applications of Biology.
Business Studies & Economics
Business Studies GCSE and A Level and A Level Economics give pupils an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge in the world of commerce, wealth creation, adding value and current affairs.
Chemistry
All Chemistry is taught within the modern Queen's building, which includes three custom built teaching laboratories, a departmental library and all necessary resources.
Since the year 2000 138 candidates have sat A-level Chemistry. All 138 candidates have passed, 103 of them securing grade A or B.
EAL
The purpose of the department is to help students whose first language is not English to acquire the skills for study in the medium of English and to support their integration socially and linguistically into all areas of school life.
English
Students studying English at Christ College will not only develop the core communication, comprehension and empathetic skills that are essential to life; they will also gain a lasting love of reading and discussing literature.
Design Technology
Design and technology is about understanding how products shape our lives. It teaches us the necessity to learn from historical design and plan for the future. Studying the subject helps pupils to understand environmental, moral and social issues and become innovators of products which may help society.
Drama
The Drama department at Christ College aims to foster in all students a lively interest in Drama as a practical subject and as a living part of our cultural heritage.
Geography
Our aim is to teach Geography in a relevant, engaging and challenging way that stimulates an interest in, understanding of, and respect for the world around us. Our schemes of work are designed to enable students to learn a range of geographical skills and develop informed views about environmental and development issues on a local to global scale. We believe that fieldwork is a vital part of geographical education and so we offer a varied and exciting programme of local, regional and overseas trips.
History
The History Department at Christ College Brecon encourages its students to immerse themselves in stories from the past. With a rich History of our own dating as far back as the thirteenth century we aim to nurture a genuine interest in the past amongst our pupils whilst also providing them with a range of skills that will assist them in reaching their full potential.
Mathematics
The Mathematics Department is the largest academic department in the school with 3 full time and 2 part time teachers. It is the most popular subject choice in the Sixth Form with over half the Lower Sixth year opting for Mathematics and a significant number also studying Further Mathematics.
Modern Foreign Languages
The Modern Languages Department at Christ College offers students the chance to study French throughout the school, Second-Language Welsh in Forms 1 – 5, and Spanish from Form 3 upwards. It also offers those with Welsh as a first language, the opportunity to gain a GCSE qualification in this subject.
Music
All pupils at Christ College study music at KS3, following a broad, skills-based course designed to enable everyone to achieve a general musical awareness, but also to challenge and extend the more able in preparation for the GCSE course. We offer music at both GCSE and Advanced levels.
Physics
All students studying Physics at Christ College will experience the variety and the excitement of a developing and contemporary science. With two full time experienced Physics teachers we aim to stimulate curiosity, interest and enjoyment in a fascinating and challenging subject. Physics is both a theoretical and a practical subject and our teaching at all ages reflects this.
Physical Education
Physical Education is compulsory at KS3, with all pupils having 1 x 35 minute lessons per week.
Non GCSE pupils have 1 compulsory lesson per week.
At KS4 GCSE is available following the WJEC Specification.
At KS5 AS and A2 the OCR specification is followed.
