The Noah's Ark Appeal, the charity raising money to build and equip the first Childrens Hospital in Wales, has received a welcome boost thanks to the efforts of pupils and staff at Christ College.
Pupils Becky Elliott and Teja Boocock, accompanied by Christ College's Mrs Allen and Mrs Shannon, recently handed over a cheque for £1968.75 to the Noah's Ark Appeal Chairman Lynne Jones MBE following a number of fundraising events. Fundraising events during 2008 included;
- A 24 hours Readathon.
- Science teacher Clive Thomas ran seven marathons around Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium raising money for the Noah's Ark Appeal.
- The very appropriately named ‘Two by Two' ( pupils came as a pair of animals) fancy dress party arranged by the senior pupils for the middle school.
- Sixth form pupil Becky Elliots produced and sold handmade bracelets – colourful and fun to compliment the appeal.
On Sunday 19th April, pupils from Orchard House along with staff and a number of brave parents set off for the house sponsored walk in aid of the Noah's Ark Appeal. The 23 mile route was along the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal from Llanfoist back to Christ College.
The weather was perfect and the canal towpath was absolutely stunning in the spring sunshine. Having left school promptly at 7.30am the walkers were under way by 8.20am, Houseparent Mrs Copp providing welcome pitstops along the way. Will Burton and Luke James set an phenomenal pace and reached the 16 mile marker a little before midday and were in time to meet Mrs Rees-Harries near Brynich Lock for a hearty Sunday lunch at 1pm.
The rest of the house were in good spirits throughout and made steady progress, Miss Pople appearing unexpectedly with a bag of goodies to keep up energy levels near Gilwern and then Mrs Copp providing coffee and extra rations at Llangattock and Talybont.
There were lots of tired legs and a few sore feet but it was a great effort, particularly from the junior form boys. So far funds raised are in excess of £1000. My particular thanks to Mr Baker, Mr Andras and Mrs Copp as well as those parents who supported the day (Report by Mr Alasdair Copp, Housemaster).
The hospital is about to commence the second phase of building and will continue to receive support from Christ College. Alway House will be continuing the fundraising effort on their behalf. For more details of the Noah's Ark Appeal, please click here.
