Henry Niblett shot shot well during the term gaining a 92/100 avaerage but the ones to watch are Rees Phillips and Dominic Hayes. Both gained a 90/100 average in their first season in the Schools Postal Leagues.

Mess Dinner - January 2010

At the kind invitation of Col (Retd.) Peter Gooderson, Regimental Secretary of The Royal Welsh, a group of staff and cadets from the school were generously hosted to a formal Mess Dinner at the Maindy Barracks of the Royal Regiment on Friday (29th Jan) night.

The Christ College CCF contingent is proud to wear the cap-badge of the Regiment, and the invitation was in recognition of the lasting warm relationship between Christ College and the Royal Welsh.

The invitation was extended to a number of Senior Officers and Cadets from the school's CCF, and was also attended by the Deputy Head, Mr Simon Spencer, on the Head's behalf, and Mr Stephen Maggs, the school's Development Director.

The dinner was hosted by Major General Roddy Porter, Colonel of the The Royal Welsh Regiment, and Colonel Commandant, The Prince of Wales' Division. Maj. Gen. Porter is a vastly experienced soldier, and is currently Chief of Staff (Joint Warfare Development) at the army's Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood; he is also President of the Armed Forces Christian Union.

Also present were Lt Col Bob Slay, who is based in Brecon and is in charge of army recruitment in Wales, and Lt Col Ed Brain, who is the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Battalion of The Royal Welsh.

The staff and pupils were joined by young officers from the Royal Welsh Regiment, including 2Lt. David Morrell (OB), known well to the Christ College pupils present. The meal was accompanied by a band from the Regimental Band of The Royal Welsh, the last surviving brass band in the British Army. Notwithstanding the formality and sense of occasion the meal was a convivial occasion, with the young officers mixing amiably with the Christ College pupils, and impressing with their demeanour and tales of the active service they've seen already in their army careers.

At the end of the evening, and following the National Anthem and loyal toasts, the Major General spoke enthusiastically of the rapport between the Royal Welsh Regiment and Christ College, both on the military and sporting fronts, with the Regiment presently sponsoring the annual Rugby Sevens Tournament each February. Cadet RSM Sam Joseph, who leads the school's CCF Contingent, thanked the Major General for the Regiment's hospitality and continuing friendship towards Christ College; he also presented a school plaque which the Major General promised to display prominently.

Biennial Inspection 09

On 7 May 09, 115 Cadets from Christ College CCF had their Biennial inspection. All three service sections were involved, and the day started at 12 noon with a formal parade and inspection.

The inspecting officer was Rear Admiral (Ret) P Wilcox CB DSC.  After the Guard of Honour had been inspected the Rear Admiral inspected the contingent and stopped to talk to several cadets.

After lunch with CCF staff and the Head, the inspection team moved to Llangorse Lake where they observed the Navy Section sailing.

The inspection team then returned to Christ College and visited the remainder of the cadets participating in various activities: .22 Shooting, Climbing, D of E, Tactics, First Aid, RAF classroom exercise and command tasks.

A formal dinner was attended by the inspecting officer, CCF Staff and 6th form cadets in the school dining hall.

Admiral Wilcox provided his report which said: "I reviewed Christ College Brecon CCF on Thursday 7th May 2009 and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see an enthusiastic, highly motivated and well led Unit."

He added: "The dedication and enthusiasm of Major Owen and the other members of staff who form this Unit is striking and clearly focussed on improving the self-confidence and abilities of the youngsters at all levels committed to their care. Equally impressive is the leadership demonstrated by the senior pupils in their roles as SNCOs."

He concluded: "Above all, I was struck by the enthusiasm of the individual members of the Unit. Confident when addressing a senior officer, there was, without exception, a clear sense that each and every pupil thoroughly enjoyed the activities provided for them through the Unit's three detachments."

The whole day was a resounding success - congratulations to all involved.

Welsh Cadet Climbing Championships: Saturday 7 March 2009

Christ College pupils participated in the fourth Welsh Cadet Climbing Championships held in North Wales last weekend ... an event at which Christ College has twice been crowned Overall Championsin the last three years.

The cadets progressed through the preliminary rounds and semi-finals on increasingly difficult climbs, with the field being reduced at each stage until four cadets were left to battle out the final.

This year there were some outstanding performances by Christ College pupils.

Christ College won the Senior and Junior Boy competition through Michael Pritz and James Spencer respectively, with Leah Thornber achieving third place in the Junior Girl competition.

There were many other good performances but the Christ College team were just unable to secure the overall title.
