BASKETBALL
Throughout the year basketball training is provided during Friday evening. A specialist coach comes in to develop the pupils skills and understanding of this increasingly popular sport. On Saturday afternoon there is an opportunity to train and play a series of fast moving matches. The school provides two teams which continue to compete successfully against local teams.
CHAMBER CHOIR
The Chamber Choir consists of about 20 or so senior pupils and members of staff. Specialising in the lighter side of the repertoire the choir rehearses weekly and sings at venues both in and out of school. Recent concerts have seen the choir perform at a number of charity functions locally, raising large sums of money; and also at a high profile event at the East India Club in London. The choir visited Japan during December 2005.
DEBATING
Debating and Public Speaking activity has seen pupils participate in external competitions: CEWC Debating; ESU Public Speaking and the Rotary Club Youth Speaks Competition. A range of pupils from the 5th, L6th and U6th have competed and have been uniformly complemented on their confident and engaging speaking style and their thorough command of subject matter.
FILM SOCIETY
Throughout the academic terms Brecon Film Society provide an extraordinarily good range of beautiful and moving films. The Film Society is open to Sixth Formers, and the films are shown in the comfort of Brecon's excellent Coliseum Cinema, a modern twin-screen privately-owned cinema just a short walk from school. It will be of particular interest to move pupils who are interested by probably the most effective means of the 20th century to communicate ideas and profound reflections on the human condition. Without fail, each film provided by this society is of an exceptionally high standards, and Brecon is very fortunate to have such a wonderful resource.
GOLF
Pupils may join Cradoc Golf Club as part of Christ College's Corporate Membership Scheme. This allows pupils to become full Junior Members of Cradoc GC and also play in competitions (a handicap certificate may be required). Cradoc Golf Club is a most attractive and testing course, with wonderful views of the Brecon Beacons. It is the home of the Welsh Champion of Champions Tournament, and is a highly regarded and popular course. Those who are interested in Golf may also use the driving range facility and organise lessons with a PGA golf professional. Golf clubs are available on loan from Christ College.
HORSE RIDING
The Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain are a wonderful environment for horse riding and this activity takes place throughout the year.
INDOOR CRICKET
Indoor Cricket takes place in the Sports Hall during Michaelmas Term and throughout the Lent Term. The sessions vary between net practices and indoor matches. The school has a Bola bowling machine capable of bowling up to 90 mph with swing and this is frequently used for specialist batting coaching, though not at that speed!
JAZZ BAND
The CCB Jazz Band is set to become one of the runaway groups in the school this year with its star-studded line up of experienced staff and pupil musicians. The highlight of the year so far was the Friends’ Dinner where the band played a variety of Blues and Swing numbers to the very enthusiastic crowd who needed very little encouragement to get up and dance. The band is also set to grow with the addition of soprano sax and jazz violin and more music will be added to the extensive repertoire. The band already has one CD to its name and does regular “gigs” outside the school.
POTTERY
The Pottery activity is focussed on having fun! Pupils learn how to throw on the potters wheel and produce pots. Pupils are encouraged to decorate their pots, and to use their imagination to produce any other designs they have in mind. Pottery is located in the Powell Art Centre, a purpose-converted building on the banks of the River Usk, containing facilities for Pottery, Photography and Art.
RAILWAY MODELLING
The Railway Modelling Group meets weekly during the winter to operate and develop the model railway which has been in existence in various forms and sites for at least 25 years. The current model is in a former storeroom and measures 2x5 metres and has four running lines on split levels. Up to six boys and girls are welcome to learn basic carpentry and wiring as well as finer modelling skills. Of course it is also an excuse to “play trains”.
.22 SHOOTING
.22 Shooting is very popular as both a game and an activity. We have our own 25 metre range and a good number of target rifles. We regularly enter teams in the postal shoots against other schools, and have produced several international shots who have represented Wales in postal internationals, and one who has represented Wales in international competitions abroad. Pupils start shooting from the 1st Form right through to the 6th Form. Once a year there is an inter-house shooting competition with a cup and medals at stake.
STAGE MANAGEMENT
Stage Management includes all technical aspects of the school theatrical productions, music concerts and lectures in the Memorial Theatre. For drama productions most of our time is spent on lighting and sound effects but also includes special effects – smoke, bubbles, UV light, flashes, explosions etc. The run up to a production is a very busy and exciting time, with many hours spent during the day and some during the night on setting up, attending rehearsals and then running the effects during the performances. All operation of the lighting and sound control desks and use of special effects is done by an enthusiastic group of pupils.
YOUNG DESIGNERS CLUB
The Young Designers Club had been formed primarily to broaden the design experience of those in Alway House. Students may design projects of their own choosing and may decide to become part of the department recycling project. Biotechnology was introduced in September 05, which has helped students develop an awareness of recycling, using materials from the College’s estate. Students also develop business skills as the end product will have commercial value. Email: dt@christcollegebrecon.com for more information.
YOUNG ENTERPRISE
Young Enterprise is a nationally recognised scheme that provides an opportunity for pupils to gain some practical experience of business, to work collaboratively with others and enjoy the challenges and rewards of wealth creation. Ideally pupils should be fourteen years old and have some interest in business matters; though subjects studied or academic ability do not preclude anybody. Reliability, a good sense of humour and an ability to work under pressure are the hallmarks of a successful Young Enterprise participant. The scheme runs from September to April, and Regional and National Events can be entered. Young Enterprise is an excellent way of boosting your Curriculum Vitae and/or UCAS personal statement.
