Luctonian Floodlit Cup

Christ College Brecon 3  Monmouth School 0

Congratulations to our U16 XV who beat Monmouth in the semi-final
of the Luctonian Floodlit Cup on 19 February, with a penalty kicked by Max Proctor.

There is no date set for the final but it has to be played before the end of term. Christ College will play Hereford Bluecoat School in the final.
This is the second year in succession playing in the final. Last year the team were runners up to Monmouth, losing in the final, 19 – 23.

Christ College Brecon - 45  Queen Elizabeth High School, Bromyard - 0

On 29 January the U16 XV marched into the semi-final of the Luctonian Floodlit Cup with a resounding 45-0 win over Queen Elizabeth High School, Bromyard.

Josh Broom and Morgan Rees contributed with 2 tries each, with Kieran Marmion and Dan Eddison scoring a try each. Max Procter capped a fine display with a try and 5 conversions. Chris Webber said; “Our team played exceptionally well considering that they have not played many games together as a unit, as many of them have been on 1st XV duty this season. I’m delighted to see so much young rugby talent coming through.”

Christ College Invitation Sevens: 17 February 2008

President of the Christ College Invitation Sevens Tournament, former Cardiff, Wales and British Lions outside half Gareth Davies said: “Coming of age” was a well used term of yesteryear when anyone reached the ripe old age of eighteen. This is the eighteenth Christ College Invitation Sevens and based on that premise, I offer my sincere congratulations to the organisers of this tournament on reaching that laudible milestone. If truth be told, the tournament came of age some years ago, well before this, its 18th anniversary, and it continues to develop and mature into one of the most popular and competitive schools sevens tournaments on the rugby calendar.”

It was a great shame that those who were geared up to play or to watch the Christ College Invitation Sevens, sponsored by The Royal Welsh Regiment, were thwarted by iron hard pitches. The tournament had to be cancelled on the day due to safety reasons.

Blundells: U15 VII

Congratulations to our U15 VIIs who finished second in their pool of 5 teams, beating Millfield in their first game. The team progressed to the semi final to be beaten by the hosts Blundells.

Led by their Captain, Rory Cremin, it was the first time many of the boys had played in a sevens tournament.

Here are the U15s results in the pool:
CCB 19 – 7 Millfield
CCB 7 – 20 Sherbourne
CCB 30 – 0  Shebbear
CCB 25 – 5 Taunton School

Lent Term 2007

Christ College Brecon/Royal Welsh Regiment Rugby Sevens Tournament: 25 February 2007

This annual event, sponsored by The Royal Welsh Regiment, saw Kirkham GS from Lancashire beat defending champions Millfield 14-10 in a tense final.

Millfield were going for their fourth consecutive title (in a tournament which has been rated as Wales’ top schoolboy sevens in the press) but they fell at the last hurdle against a talented and aggressive Kirkham.  Preston Grammar School (coached by Old Breconian Aled Trenhaile) had beaten tournament favourites Ellesmere College in the quarter-finals, and then went on to overturn the Christ College team and Millfield for a famous win.  In their intuitive fly-half Phil Leigh, Kirkham had the general and will-of-the-wisp that all teams need, and he was rightly selected as Player of the Tournament by Brigadier Rick Libbey, representing the loyal and generous sponsors of the day – The Royal Welsh Regiment.

At one stage, it looked like the Christ College team could go all the way.  We beat Old Swinford Hospital 19-0 and King's School Worcester 20-7 to get to the last four.  Mike Painter was outstanding throughout, and was well supported by Alex McKenzie and Jack Lynch, but the loss of Gethin Whittall in the game against Old Swinford Hospital, did not help our cause.

The Christ College team were in the semi-finals where we gave the eventual winners a hard game before going down 28-14.  Glantaf failed to win a game whilst both Llandovery College and Monmouth, went out in the 1st round of the last 16.

In the most open competition in the history of the tournament, any number of schools could have won the Llangoed Hall Trophy but the composure, competitiveness and strength of Kirkham, in stamina-sapping conditions, carried the day.

The Headmaster commented “
It was good to welcome to Christ College many of the top rugby playing schools in Wales and England.  The elements lived up to the tradition of the day and there was intermittent rain throughout, although it did nothing to dampen the excellence of the occasion and it was clear that there were very few easy games for anyone.  As usual too, the presence of the Royal Welsh Regiment added a special sense of occasion.  Thank you, also, to the refereeing team who officiated with their customary efficiency and understanding.

I was very pleased with the performance of the Christ College team whose progress to the semi-finals was based on sustaining constant pressure on opposition teams.  As is usual in the unforgiving game of Sevens just one or two little mistakes at crucial moments exacted a large toll and prevented progress to the final.  The wet and slippery conditions enabled the boys to display quite high levels of handling skills and but for the want of a real flier the team might well have gone all the way.  There is always next year!”
