Ann
Smart/Presidents Cup National Netball Championships 2008
|
Christ
College achieved the double this season by winning both U18
and U16 County Competitions to qualify for the Ann Smart
National Competition at U16 and the Presidents Cup National
Competition at U18. Each County in Wales organizes a
qualifying area competition and the winning team goes on to
represent their County at the National Finals, held in March
every year. |
Presidents Cup
2008
For the 10th
consecutive year Christ College represented the County in the
Presidents Cup Competition, which took place in Brecon this year on
Saturday 15 March.
Eight U19 School/6th Form College
teams competed and the Christ College team was determined to improve
upon their previous best final position of 4th in this
competition.
The Christ
College team captained by Rhiannon Woodrow, were quietly confident
and they began very well by beating the eventual winners Afan Nedd
Tawe by 12 goals to 8.

Subsequent wins
against South East 9-8; Eryri 13-3 and North East 15-3; placed
Christ College in an extremely strong position and with a draw
against Cardiff & the Vale (previous winners 2007) the team was
bound to better their previous success in this National Competition!
A narrow loss
against Glamorgan Valleys 10-8 placed Christ College in the final
position of runners-up!
The Presidents
Cup Competition showcases some of the best young talent in Welsh
Netball and always provides a great spectacle of dynamic play. The
Christ College Netballers were exemplary in their commitment and
sportsmanship on the court and they thoroughly deserved their best
result in this National Competition to date. Once again Christ
College demonstrated skill, enthusiasm and sportsmanship in this
premier competition for schools within the Welsh Netball calendar.
Ann Smart
Tournament 2008
This
year the Ann Smart Tournament was hosted by Powys and played
at Llandrindod Leisure Centre on Saturday 15 March, with
eight qualifying schools competing. The championship
witnessed closely contested games and although the Christ
College team was a young side, they competed strongly once
they settled. Captained by Jess Tait, they developed as a
team throughout the competition and although they finished 6th
they clearly gained from the experience, showing a strength
in depth to Netball at Christ College.

This was the biggest Netball event ever held in Wales: 40 schools; 100
teams; 1,200 players!
Christ College entered 3 teams (and played as the national side of
Samoa) in this the second Fantasy World Netball
Festival at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
During
the day there were visits from players from the current Wales U19
Netball squad including Stephanie Williams who took part in the World
Youth Championship in Florida when she was just 16 years old; members of
the Celtic Dragon Rugby team; and Ursula “Billy” Bowers – Captain of the
Welsh senior Netball team.

BBC
news teams were also at the event and the Netball Festival featured on
the evening news broadcast!
Twenty
eight Christ College girls played in the tournament and thoroughly enjoyed the
occasion, gaining valuable playing experience against strong opposition.

Our
U12 team, playing together for the first time... They played hard and improved
as the day went on!
Our
U13 team were unlucky to win 2 matches as forfeit games due to lack
of opposition, though 3 very good wins placed them 2nd in
their group overall.
Our
U14
team played incredibly well, winning 6 out of 7 matches
and drawing the other. They faced Hartridge in
the semi-finals and were unlucky to have to play to sudden death
following extra time, losing 3-2! |

Many
thanks to Gina, Hannah and Mrs Trumper for making the day possible for
Christ College Netballers.
This the biggest Netball event in Wales and it was an
outstanding schools event played in the superb setting of the Millennium
Stadium… We look forward to more of the same next year!
