Rugby

Christ College has a proud rugby tradition and has produced many players who have gone on to achieve national representative honours for their country of origin as well as the British Lions.

 We are grateful to Killik & Co for their generous sponsorship

of Rugby at Christ College Brecon

Coaching is of the highest standard and is overseen by Director of Rugby James Reynolds (former Cambridge University Rugby Blue, Neath, Bridgend, London Welsh and Old Breconian) and Gary Halpin (former London Irish, Harlequins, Leinster and Ireland) who between them coach the 1st XV squad.

The school fields 1st and 2nd XVs, as well as U16s, U15s, U14s, U13s and U12s teams. We play on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons during the Michaelmas term, against Welsh and English schools; Seven-a-side rugby is played in the Lent term, beginning with the prestigious Christ College/Royal Welsh 7s Tournament and culminating in the Rosslyn Park National (Rosslyn Park) Sevens a side competition. Christ College rugby teams also experience the thrills and spills of regular domestic and overseas tours. Recently the 1st XV returned from a successful tour to Japan and the U14s and 15s regularly go on tour to Ireland.

The aim of rugby at Christ College is to promote the safe and enjoyable participation in the game, in a way that contributes to the overall wellbeing and development of those who take part, and which lays a foundation for future enjoyment in the sport. To enable this, we will continue to develop a suitable programme of fixtures, bearing in mind the size and strength of opposing teams, travel times, and the need to protect teaching time wherever possible.

The recruitment of promising sportsmen at 11+, 13+ and 16+ is a vital part of the process, and the development of links with local rugby clubs like Brecon RFC and Gwernyfed RFC  as well as the Cardiff Blues Region, is crucial to this. Sports scholarships are therefore available for those who show real promise.

Christ College will continue to raise the profile of rugby here in the following ways:

  • we will recruit, train and update the best available rugby coaches, ensuring that they are up-to-date with the latest WRU Pathways and guidelines;
  • promote Sports Scholarships to talented and gifted sportsmen who show real promise;
  • continue our highly popular and successful domestic and international tour programme;
  • continue to develop our links with Prep/Junior Schools through tournaments and events;
  • continue to build our relationship with local rugby clubs, the Cardiff Blues Region and the WRU.

This may, in some circumstances, result in some fixtures not being on the regular calendar. This will not be because we have changed our ethos but because other schools have changed theirs.

James Reynolds - Director of Rugby

James joins us from St George’s College, Weybridge where he was instrumental in developing the rugby and was also Director of Sport building a National reputation for sport. James returns as an Old Breconian and is excited about linking the past with the future in rugby as well as supporting other sports. James is a RFU Level 3 Licenced Coach with a wealth of experience in coaching a breadth of age group rugby.

 James enjoyed a 7 year professional rugby career representing Neath and Bridgend in the Welsh Rugby Premiership, before the regions began; and London Welsh in the English Leagues. He was also a member of the Irish Exiles Provincial XV which contained a number of senior internationals. Whilst at Cambridge University he gained his blue and scored 2 tries in the victory over Oxford at Twickenham. Whilst at Christ College, James represented Welsh Schools winning the Triple Crown and continued through the age groups including senior international sevens.
