New Science Centre causes Scholarship Chain
Reaction
 |
Following the announcement of the
development of a new science centre,
Christ College Brecon has joined forces
with Tredegar based company Penn
Pharmaceutical Services Ltd to launch a
joint scholarship scheme aimed at
providing career opportunities for young
scientists.
The “Penn Scholarship” will be awarded
to sixth formers wishing to study a
combination of A Level sciences at
Christ College.
Pupils will have up to 100 per cent of
their fees paid for two years, receive
mentoring from Penn Pharmaceuticals and
have the opportunity to complete up to
four weeks work experience at the
company’s research facilities in
Tredegar.
In an agreement arranged by Foundation
Director Steve Maggs and HR Director of
Penn Valerie Ellis, pupils will find
that during their work experience,
pupils will get the chance to become
involved in a range of business
initiatives and science-based projects
as well as having the chance to work
towards a work-based qualification. |
Peter George, CEO at Penn, said: “Over recent
years the number of pupils that go on to study
degree courses in science at university has
dropped therefore fewer high-quality graduates
are going into the science industry. We welcome
this partnership with Christ College as we are
passionate about inspiring pupils to get
involved in science and we are well positioned
to demonstrate the excellent opportunities
existing within the science industry. Christ
College’s reputation in developing young
scientists is outstanding and they are
developing some of the best school science
facilities anywhere in Wales.”
Head of Christ College Emma Taylor said: “We are
extremely grateful to Penn Pharmaceutical
Services Ltd who have recognised the potential
of this exciting and innovative scheme, and will
provide enormous opportunities to pupils who are
passionate about seeking a career in science. As
well as potentially having some or all of their
fees paid, the pupils will benefit from the
support and expertise of one of the UK’s leading
pharmaceutical companies who compete on a global
basis.”
Foundation Director Steve Maggs added “The
scheme is open to any applicant in Wales and is
part of the school’s very firm commitment to
make education at Christ College as accessible
and available to pupils from as many different
backgrounds as possible.
The Penn Scholarship is a welcome addition to
the other science scholarships provided by the
Hubert Jones Legacy, and enables Christ College
to provide even more financial support to
families of able and talented pupils who want to
study in our superb environment. Once again,
this is a clear demonstration that Christ
College is playing a full part in producing
outstanding young scientists, teaching them in
21st Century facilities, as well as
demonstrating its continued commitment to its
charitable aims and objects. After all,
Christ College was founded in 1541 on charitable
principles and we remain true to those
principles today.”
Any able young scientists who are keen to explore
this fantastic opportunity should contact:

Megan's
sponsored bike ride in Israel for "Bridges for
Peace"
 |
Megan Jones is about to
embark on a sponsored bike ride with a
difference. On the 25 April, Megan Jones
(15) will begin a 125 miles cycle ride
across Israel to raise money for the poorest
families in that nation, and will be
supporting Jewish and Palestinian families.
The route which will be on a combination of
tarmac roads, dirt tracks and desert terrain
begins in Galilee, heads through the Jordan
Valley to the Dead Sea and onto Massada. It
finishes with a gruelling 3000 foot climb
into Jerusalem.
Megan said: “I’ve been trying
to put in the hours on the bike to prepare
myself for the trip, and I’m really grateful
to everyone at Christ College who have been
so supportive, enabling me to take on this
challenge.”
Megan, who will be
accompanied by her father Chris, will be
supporting the charity “Bridges For Peace”
which is unique in that it works with both
sides of the political divide in this
troubled land, and seeks to bring help and
reconciliation between Jews and
Palestinians. |
Head, Emma Taylor said:
“This
is a really wonderful initiative and we are all
behind Megan as she sets out on her great adventure.
She will keep in touch with the school while she is
away and we will watch her progress with great
interest. It will be a great challenge for her but
we know she can do it; she is a determined girl.”
Charities set to benefit
from Marathon Man's Lucky Seven
Head of Science, Clive Thomas will be
running in his 12th and
probably his last
London
Marathon on 13th April and he
thought he would mark the event in
style, ensuring that charities benefit
at the same time. He set himself the
objective to run 7 marathon distances in
7 different countries (London being the
7th) between January and
April of this year.
Clive is well on the way to achieving
this, having completed the first six of
his marathons distances. His first was
in Wales; a route close to his home in
Joppa, Llanrhystud, West Wales. Rosslare
in Southern Ireland was the venue of his
second and in early March he drove up to
Scotland and ran 26 miles just across
the border. Over the Easter period he
ran three more marathon distances in
Belgium, France and Northern Ireland …
back to back! He will finish his
challenge on 13th April in
London. He is keeping a photographic
record of his challenge.
Sponsorship monies raised will be shared
equally with the Noah’s Ark Appeal (The
Children’s Hospital for Wales), The Duke
of Edinburgh’s Award (Wales) and
Schoolchildrenforchildren.
Clive, 48, has been running for more
than 30 years and his personal best for
a marathon is 2 hrs 58 mins. 59 secs. He
said; “I’ve think I’ve competed in more
than 35 marathons. I keep a daily record
of all my training sessions and runs and
have calculated that I’m well on the way
to having run the equivalent of twice
around the world!”
|
 |
Clive has raised more than £2000 on his latest
and last venture, and is keen to secure more
sponsorship at this late stage. Any potential
sponsor can contact him at:

Next generation science-hub planned for Christ
College
|
Next
generation scientists and engineers are set
to benefit from the development of a £1.5
million purpose-built science centre which
is currently being constructed.
A new two-story building will be added to
existing facilities, and will house a number
of new hi-tech labs and teaching spaces.
The design will feature a number of
sustainable measures and local materials,
such as Welsh stone and local timber
cladding.
The centre will be built off-site by
construction specialists, Yorkon, minimising
the disruption to teaching, and guaranteeing
the completion of the project on time and on
budget. Final on-site construction and
fit-out will be completed by this August, in
time for the 2008/09 academic year. |
 |
|
Head, Emma Taylor said: “I am
thrilled to be bucking national trends by
investing in a new science facility of this
quality at a time when young scientists are
becoming something of an endangered species.
The sustainable design of the building is
important not only environmentally but
educationally too, as pupils will be able to
see features such as re-use of water and
solar heating at first hand. Yorkon have
been wonderfully innovative partners in the
process and we are also grateful for
guidance from the Brecon Beacons National
Park Authority.” |
This investment is the latest in a series of
developments since receiving a £4 million bequest
from a former pupil. The windfall was due to
the generosity of Old Breconian and pharmacist,
David Hubert Jones, from Glanaman in
Carmarthenshire, who wished the money to be spent
fostering a future generation of scientists.
Steve Maggs, Director of the Christ College
Foundation said: “The Hubert Jones Legacy is not
only providing a significant proportion of the
capital needed to develop the new science centre. It
has boosted our endowment and is enabling Christ
College to provide even more science scholarships
and bursaries making our facilities more accessible
and affordable for families of able and talented
pupils who want to study in our superb environment.
This is a clear demonstration that Christ College is
playing a full part in producing outstanding young
scientists, teaching them in 21st Century
facilities, as well as demonstrating its continued
commitment to its charitable aims and objects. After
all, Christ College was founded in 1541 on
charitable principles and we remain true to those
principles today.”

Cultural Tour of Rome: 14-17 March 08
 |
Friday 14 March
Christ College Cultural Tour group arrived
late afternoon in good spirits and blessed
with great weather.
Our first visit was to the
Trevi Fountain to take in the atmosphere and
beauty of this extraordinary
monumental baroque fountain
which was finally completed in 1762. Legend
has it you will return to Rome if you throw
a coin into the water – hence the group did
throw their money away!
From the
Trevi, we went on a little jaunt to the
Spanish Steps for some singing. Bearing in
mind we were on the eve of a possible Grand
Slam, Welsh songs were in favour and the
group received special applause for their
rendition of “Cwm Rhondda” and “Delilah”.

Saturday 15 March
After navigating the metro system we were
greeted by our guide, Maria, who gave us a
detailed tour of the Vatican Museums.
The Vatican
Museums were founded under the patronage of
two 18th century popes who were among the
first to open collections of art to the
general public for viewing, therefore
promoting culture among the masses.
At the end of the Vatican
Museums is the Sistine Chapel where the
party were given time for quiet reflection.
The art is remarkable and it is the venue
for the election of each successive Pope.
A tour of St Peter’s Basilica
followed, which was until recently the
largest church ever built and was said to be
built on the spot where
Peter, the apostle who is considered the
first pope, was crucified and buried
in 64 AD;
his tomb is under the main altar.
Late afternoon was taken up
with supporting Wales in the Grand Slam and
Rome was full of Scots in kilts who lost to
Italy... |
 |
 |
Sunday 16 March
Revd Baker managed to acquire
some tickets for Palm Sunday Mass with Pope
Benedict XVI. A group of students and staff
went to this very memorable and moving
occasion which was the highlight of their
tour.
The rest of the group
navigated a very busy metro (due to the Rome
Marathon and Palm Sunday Mass) to visit
Castel St Angelo, which was started in 135AD
as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian. It
holds some very impressive art, costumes and
artefacts and the views over Rome were
magnificent.
In the afternoon the tour
visited the Colosseum where our guide
explained why such a structure was
built to witness
bloody contests of might and the slaughter
of wild beasts.
The stadium was an elliptical stadium, 188
metres along its longest axis and 40 metres
high and is truly an impressive site, inside
and out.
An
optional tour of the Roman Forum followed.
|
That evening the party ventured on to
a bus to Piazza Navona
which was originally
built as a stadium in the first century for athletic
contests and chariot races. Piazza Navona is lined
with luxurious cafes and Baroque palaces and is the
home to three lavish fountains. Pupils and staff
took in the atmosphere and sampled the local fayre,
especially the ice cream…
Monday 17 March
Pupils and staff made the most of
their last few hours. Some visited the
Pantheon and others revisited their favourite spots
and did some last minute shopping. Sadly, a very
tired but culturally enlightened group boarded their
flight and returned to the UK on time.
Ann Smart/Presidents Cup National Netball

Heritage Lottery Fund for Library Archive
 |
Plans were announced this week to put 467
years of history on display at Christ
College, thanks to a £44,600 grant from the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
Historical artefacts and records which have
until now been in storage, will soon take
pride of place in a museum-standard archive
within the school's library.
The work, which will begin in the summer,
will result in many more historical
materials, photographs and artefacts
relating to Christ College's long history
coming into public display.
Pupils from local primary schools, as well
as pupils from Christ College will be
involved throughout the development of the
archive.
Christ College Librarian and Archivist Anna
Lang (pictured back right) said: "The
archive will be established on, and will
work to, Museum Documentation Association
standards, using professionally recognised
cataloguing systems and high quality
conservation methods for records and
materials. With the help of this award and
the involvement of the local community, we
hope we will soon establish a centre of
excellence, and be a learning centre and
reference point to all of those interested
in local history."
|
Head, Emma Taylor (pictured back left) said:
"We are very grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund
for this award. Christ College has been a seat of
learning since 1541, and the site of the school has
been occupied for at least 750 years, therefore it
is of no surprise that we have a fascinating story
to tell. The development of an archive will ensure
that we can preserve memories and records of life at
Christ College and these can then be enjoyed by
current pupils, Old Breconians and by the wider
community."
Charity Commission: Christ College "chimes with
the times"
The Chair of the Charity Commission praised Christ
College in a speech to a gathering of independent
school heads last week. Dame Suzi Leather
singled out Christ College, and its head, Emma
Taylor for its enthusiasm, imagination and passion,
commending the way that the school operates within
the local community.
Dame Suzi Leather added that Christ
College was “a wonderful example of what a creative
and inclusive approach can achieve.”
“It chimes well with the increasing
importance social commentators and public policy
makers of all political hues are giving to investing
in our communities. The activities of this Brecon
school chimes with the times.”
Head, Emma Taylor said: “It is
incredibly satisfying that Christ College has been
recognised as an example to other independent
schools.
“Our approach has always been to work
actively within the community to provide support to
local schools, community groups and other
organisations. To be singled out among all UK
independent schools for our work within the
community makes me feel very proud indeed. I only
hope we continue to live up to our reputation.”
Dame Suzi Leather’s speech to the
Independent School Council’s conference follows the
Charity Commission’s publication of it final general
guidance on public benefit during January 2008.
A draft sub-sector guidance on public
benefit for fee-charging charities was published on
Wednesday 12 March signalling the start of a
three-month consultation period during which
independent schools can comment.
Royal Society of Chemists Lecture at Christ College
Aspiring scientists, parents and members of the
local community were enthralled by a Royal Society
of Chemistry lecture delivered by Dr Jim Ballantine,
former Director of Marine Studies and Chemistry
Reader at Swansea University. The lecture was
titled Poisons From The Sea … Or When To Avoid The
Fish Course!
Dr Ballantine pointed out that some of the most
poisonous materials known to mankind are to be found
in living systems in our oceans and that this has
been the subject of scientists study for many years.
His lecture provided a light-hearted insight into
selected marine toxins, including their occurrence,
the way in which these materials impinge on
folklore, local customs and dietary habits, and a
little about their chemistry. Dr Ballantine covered
topics that ranged from Puffer Fish poisoning and
how to choose a restaurant in Japan, paralytic
shellfish poisoning from the ingestion of shellfish,
why no-one swims near Cairns in Queensland,
Australia between September and March and why not to
pick up pretty snail shells near the Red Sea!
Paul Smith, Head of Chemistry at Christ College
said: “The lecture was excellent as Dr Ballantine
pitched it at just the right level. Since the
lecture I have had many thoughtful comments back
from those present. We are in discussions with the
Royal Society of Chemists with a view to making this
a regular event.”
Book Club Readathon
 |
Fifteen members
of the Christ College Alway House Book Club,
which meets every Wednesday afternoon in the
library, took part in a sponsored
‘Readathon’ to raise money for their House
charity, the Noah’s Ark Appeal.
Their aim was to raise money
for the charity through an activity which
the very children they wanted to help could
also enjoy.
Librarian, Anna Lang said:
“Reading is one of the few escapes from
illness, and can be accessed anywhere at any
time. In addition to raising money for this
worthwhile cause, we hope to raise awareness
with our young pupils the role that books
and reading can play as relaxation tool, as
well as drawing attention to the huge
investment in new books which Christ College
has made in recent years.”

Major month of Music at Christ College
If you think you’ve heard a lot of music lately
drifting from the halls of Christ College, you’d
probably be right! The music department has had an
exceptionally busy month highlighted by visits from
some very talented former pupils.
|
Soprano songstress, Sarah-Jane Davies set the tempo
for the month when she returned to her old school to
deliver a singing master class to pupils. The
English National Opera star put some of Christ
College’s senior pupils through their paces in front
of an audience of pupils and invited guests. (Pupils
who took part were Billy Mason-Watts, Joshua Games,
Rachel Williams, Alex Davies and Jordan Williams).
A graduate of the Royal College of Music, Sarah-Jane
represented Wales in last year’s BBC Cardiff Singer
of the World Competition. Pupil Alex Davies said:
“It was an amazing experience to sing with
Sarah-Jane and I think we all learned a great deal
from the class.” |

 |
On Friday 22 February, the Lloyds TSB Young
Musician of the Year Competition took place.
Adjudicators Mark Duthie, Master of the
Music at Brecon Cathedral and Helen Porter,
Director of Music at Dean Close School in
Cheltenham heaped praise on all of the
competitors for their outstanding
performances. The prize for best
performance of a contemporary work was
awarded to saxophonist Steffan Raw-Rees, but
for his varied repertoire and communication
with the audience, the Lloyds TSB Young
Musician of the Year was awarded to soloist
Joshua Games.
For information on the evening click here. |
|
Rounding off the month’s activities will be
a visit from classical guitarist and former
Christ College pupil Adam Khan.
Adam was awarded a Global Music Award in recognition of his
most recent album ‘A Day In November’ and
was also nominated as one of the ‘Top
Achievers of Asian Origin’ for his 2006
concert schedule which took him to Asia,
Europe and South America.
This year will find Adam issuing a new
recording of the complete works of Luys de
Narvaez, giving recitals in Holland,
Malaysia, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and the
USA, and undertaking an extensive tour of
the UK with Luis Orias Diz as the
Welsh-Argentine Guitar Duo.
Adam performed in a recital at Christ
College for the local community on 29
February. |
 |
Emma Taylor, Head, said: “It was a privilege to
witness the outstanding talent on display at the
Young Musician of the Year. We’re also exceptionally
pleased that some of our most talented former pupils
have found the time to return to school to impart
some of their skills and knowledge to our current
pupils. Christ College has a very strong music
department and we’re always looking for new ways to
challenge and extend our pupils.”
Head of the Music, Jonathan Cooper commented “It is
a great learning experience for pupils when we take
the curriculum out of the classroom. This has
been a particularly special month for the music
department. Sarah-Jane and Adam are very
gifted musicians and we’re so pleased that we were
able to arrange these special events to benefit our
current pupils.”

French Cultural Trip by Upper Sixth Pupils studying
French
Upper Sixth pupils studying French
have returned from a week’s stay with French
families in a small town, Monistrol sur Loire, half
an hour south of St Etienne. Braving the -14 degree
temperatures for lessons beginning at 8 am the three
girls spent 4 days at the “Lycee Prive Notre Dame du
Chateau” and a weekend with the family exploring the
local area and sampling local culture.
Rachel Williams said “I feel that
this exchange has really brought aspects of the
syllabus to life as we have experienced first-hand
the French school system and their very long school
day.”
Alex Davies commented: “It was
tiring, the school day was longer than ours, which I
didn’t think possible, but it has certainly improved
my confidence and fluency when speaking and I am
sure will have a positive impact on my grades in the
summer.”
Emma Thomas said; “Their school life
is very different to ours as we have so many
activities after lessons. I really enjoyed going to
their home every night for authentic French cuisine.
I wonder how they will find it when they return to
visit us next month, with life in a boarding
school?”
Pupils and staff from the Lycee Prive
Notre Dame du Chateau in Monistrol sur Loire, France
will be coming to Christ College Brecon for 1 week
in February for a reciprocal visit when they will
join in lessons, games and activities, as well as a
number of cultural experiences in and around the
area.
