Academic Results Summary

A Level Results

Much has been said and written about the increase in challenge and difficulty of A levels and the uncertainty that changes in assessment has brought. However, some things remain constant and reliable, and this year’s A level results at Christ College Brecon reflect the long-standing academic success of the school, particularly in the areas of science, technology and mathematics.

This year’s top performer was local pupil Catie Masters, whose A* grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics secure her a coveted place at the London School of Economics to study Maths and Economics. Catie, from Sennybridge, also achieved an A* in her Extended Project Qualification. Other local pupils achieving excellence included Harry Channing, from Brecon, with A*s in Maths and Further Maths and an A in Physics, who is heading for the highly competitive Maths course at Bath University; Julia Copp, from Brecon, who is off to Edinburgh to study Languages on the basis of 2 A*s in French and Economics and As in History and Art; Matilda Lewis, also from Brecon, heading for International Management and Languages at Bath University with 2 A*s and an A; and  Dafydd Owen-Newns, from Builth Wells, whose A* in Computer Science, along with 3 A grades, gains him a place to read Physics at Exeter University.

The overall pass rate at Christ College was 98%, with 44% of those grades at A* or A. Over a quarter of all the candidates achieved 3As or better. With 65% of all candidates for Maths, Further Maths and Physics gaining an A or A*, all candidates in French, Spanish or German gaining A or A* and 5 of the 8 English Literature candidates gaining the top A/A* grades, it is clear that pupils are achieving top grades even in the toughest subjects, which explains the strong rate of acceptance on some of the most competitive university courses in the country. Many of the top pupils also secured outstanding results in the Extended Project Qualification, in which two thirds of candidates achieved A or A*.
